The aim of this project is to explore and gain stronger understanding of accessible and inclusive design through user-centred fashion/ apparel design development.
Overview:
There is a need now to design for accessibility as the ‘norm’. The fashion industry is looking for a future of inclusion, acceptance and opportunity for people with disability. 15% people in the world identify themselves as living with disability creating difficulties to find clothing that is stylish and can meet their needs. Grace Stratton, Accessibility advocate and co-founder of ‘All is for All,’ when opening New Zealand Fashion this year, declared “Our goal is to highlight the cultural relevance of fashion into a transformative action so that we can achieve an accessible society and fashion industry…one which value and celebrates difference.” New Zealand Fashion week’s focus on diversity along with other international shows as New York fashion week was a positive step towards highlighting this space and relevance for design.
